Background of the Study
Climate change has emerged as a significant factor influencing the spread of vector-borne diseases (VBDs), such as malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024). Rising temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, and increased humidity create favorable conditions for the proliferation of disease-carrying vectors, particularly mosquitoes (Adebayo & Tijani, 2024). The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has reported that regions experiencing extreme weather variations are at higher risk of VBD outbreaks due to expanded vector breeding habitats (Usman & Bello, 2024).
In Nigeria, Yobe State is particularly vulnerable to climate-related health challenges due to its semi-arid climate and frequent environmental changes. The region has witnessed an increase in malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases, which many researchers attribute to shifting climatic patterns (Olaniyan et al., 2023). However, there is limited localized data assessing the direct correlation between climate change variables and the spread of VBDs in Yobe State.
This study aims to investigate the impact of climate change on the spread of vector-borne diseases in Yobe State, providing evidence-based insights for disease control and climate adaptation strategies.
Statement of the Problem
The increasing prevalence of vector-borne diseases in Yobe State raises concerns about the role of climate change in influencing disease transmission patterns (Adebayo & Tijani, 2024). Many studies have shown that higher temperatures and erratic rainfall increase mosquito breeding sites, but localized data in Yobe State is scarce (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024).
Additionally, the state’s healthcare system is already under strain due to existing disease burdens, and a further increase in VBD cases could overwhelm available resources (Usman & Bello, 2024). Without empirical evidence linking climate change to disease spread, policymakers may struggle to implement effective prevention and control strategies. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the climate-related drivers of VBD transmission in Yobe State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To analyze temperature and rainfall patterns in Yobe State over the past decade.
2. To assess trends in vector-borne disease prevalence in relation to climatic changes.
3. To evaluate public health responses and adaptation strategies for controlling VBDs in Yobe State.
Research Questions
1. How have temperature and rainfall patterns changed in Yobe State in recent years?
2. What is the relationship between climate change variables and the prevalence of vector-borne diseases?
3. What strategies are currently in place to mitigate the impact of climate change on disease transmission?
Research Hypotheses
1. Rising temperatures and increased rainfall contribute to higher vector-borne disease prevalence in Yobe State.
2. Changes in climate variables significantly affect mosquito breeding patterns and disease transmission.
3. Effective adaptation strategies can mitigate the impact of climate change on vector-borne disease outbreaks.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on climatic data and disease prevalence records in Yobe State. Limitations may include reliance on secondary data sources and potential inconsistencies in disease reporting.
Definitions of Terms
• Climate Change: Long-term shifts in temperature, precipitation, and weather patterns due to natural and human-induced factors.
• Vector-Borne Diseases: Infectious diseases transmitted by vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, and flies (e.g., malaria, dengue fever).
• Disease Transmission: The spread of infectious diseases from one host to another, influenced by environmental and climatic conditions.
